Where Baby Boomers come to “Cook up” their Recipe for a Richer, Fuller Life

February 1st, 2006

GREAT, GRAND, AND GLORIOUS GREETINGS!!!

Welcome one and all to COACHLYON’S “I’m Creating My Recipe…” WEBLOG!

This blog will be catering to “Boomers” who are actively involved in creating their “Recipe” for a richer, fuller life.  We will have a special focus on the issues and challenges that come with leaving a long-term career or vocation.

A basic guideline for this blog is that we will NOT be discussing financial matters!  There are plenty of sites and blogs on those topics.  Here we’ll be paying attention to the “Meat and Potatoes” of Life  - our day-to-day lives and our quest for them to be happy, healthy, and meaningful.

(WARNING:  DUE TO MANY YEARS AS A CHEF, AND A WRY SENSE OF HUMOR,  I AM ALLOWED “CORNEY” JOKES, AND WELL “TOASTED” PUNS.  And the privileges and liberties I take myself, I extend to my community of ‘Artful Bloggers’ - just keep it in “Good Taste”!)

For those of you who arrived here through the miracle of the Internet, other than from my website, or emails, WELCOME, again, and please visit the site: http://www.coachlyon.net

Well, for now, “that’s all folks…”

Y’all Come Back now, you Heah?!

You Are Cordially Invited…

October 22nd, 2006

GREETINGS AND SALUTIONS!

You Are Cordially Invited… TO BLOG/COMMENT HERE!!!
O.K., COACHLYON has been a Bleak, NON-BLOGGER.

NO LONGER!!!  We’ve learned if you don’t BLOG, you SOG..

(Like the cereal that sits in the bowl, and doesn’t Snap, Crackle, or Pop, it just SOGS!)

SO, here we go!

It is our new commitment to BLOG at least twice a week, and to get the PRE-RETIREMENT COMMMUNITY in here, and actively discussing their issues, thoughts, and concerns.  Hey folks, in the USA alone, there’s about 78 MILLION Baby Boomers forming a literal TSUNAMI of human beings reaching the “Legal” age of RETIREMENT.  Fortunately, the BOOMERS are changing what it means to be “retired” and not opting for the pure leisure lifestyle of earlier generations.

AND THAT’S WHAT “I’m Creating My Recipe…” IS ALL ABOUT!

Creating an active, meaningful, fulfilling lifestyle for the “THIRD QUARTER” of their lives.  Those 20-30 years AFTER that “CAREER” that we are now afforded by advances in Health, Education, and careful Financial Planning.  The 50 of today is the 30 of our predecessors!!

I’m 61, and I’m at the gym 6-7 days a week…  In my youth, if you saw a 60 year old at the gym every day, you’d  probably say, “Who’s that?… Frickin’ Jack La Lane?  Now, about half the folks at the gym are Boomers!  In the immortal words of one of the most prophetic Boomer poets, Bob Dylan: “The Times They Are A Changin’!”  So Folks, let’s get with it and “Create Our Recipes for a Happier

Longer Life in Retirement, or the “Third Quarter”… (Life after the 9-5 WORK LIFE)

I am cordially inviting you all to chime in and “Get it goin’ on” about MOVIN’ ON!

Granted, my focus is the psychological and emotional challenges EVERYONE faces when they leave a long term engagement, my intention is to get folks to think about these things, accept, and move past them into their own active, meaningful, fulfilling lifestyle.  My website, www.coachlyon.net offers a lot of information, and you can get the whole story, and some very cool tools at www.RECIPEDVD.net

So, what are you waiting for?

More Radio Interviews, and a “Live” “Recipe” Presentation!

October 30th, 2006

Greetings and Salutations!

Well, this has been a busy week in “RecipeLand”.

COACHLYON interviewed live on the “Michael Dresser Show”, WTKM 1540 AM, in Wisconsin.  It was a great half hour interview with Michael, who as well as a radio talk show host, is a nationally recognized media trainer.

Just after my interview with Michael, I got a call inviting me to interview with Armstrong Williams, WGCV 620 AM, in South Carolina, on 9 NOV 06 - after the elections…  maybe the segment will focus on how some politicians will be going into “Honorable Un-Employment”…

Tuesday, I got a frantic call from Beverly, president of the California State Employees Association - Retirees Chapter 165.  She had invited me to give the live “Recipe” presentation on 28 FEB 07.  However, at the last minute, on TUES. for a WED. meeting she found out their scheduled speaker could not make it!  So, COACHLYON to the rescue!  WED, 25 0CT, I gave the full “Creating Your Recipe for a Happier, Longer Life in Retirement” presentation - including the Chocolate Sauce tasting at the end - to a group of 48 “successfully” retired CA State Employees.  Even though I was “preaching to the choir”, the audience looked like “Bobbin’ Head” dolls as I went through the psychological and emotional challenges people face when leaving ANY longterm engagement.

Below is a copy of one of my favorite articles, and it reveals why the Retirees from the State of California related so well to the presenation:

What would you think about a one month vacation in Costa Rica to celebrate, and kick off, your new life in retirement?  Then come back and do what you absolutely LOVE to make the supplemental income you want to keep up your lifestyle?

Well, that’s the plan we came up with for Alice.  She was coming up on her retirement from 30+ years with the State of California, and seemed to be getting anxious every time she started to think about it.  She had been to quite a few retirement parties for friends who worked in state service, and she seemed to be excited for them, but when she thought about her own “Retirement”, an uneasy feeling crept in.  After talking about it, she realized that she really didn’t know what she was going to do after she left working at the Department of Health Services where she was a well respected supervisor.  Somewhere in the back of her mind, she was thinking:  What will I do when I don’t have work to go into?  Who will I be when I’m not Alice King, DHS Information Systems Supervisor?  When will I be able to see my friends at DHS?  Will they still want to be with me?  Yet, she couldn’t put words on these questions — she just was very anxious about retiring!  She was SCARED!  So, we encouraged her to think about “life after DHS”.  When asked what she loved to do, the words nearly flew out of her mouth, “Decorating and Gardening”!  Indeed, she was very good at interior and exterior decorating, … and she loved it.  So we talked about her having a small business where she got to do that.  Also, she was doing a re-fi on her house, and the bank had sent a “mobile notary” to the house with the papers to sign.  She talked with the notary, and liked the idea of perhaps doing that for extra money as well.  Alice declared that she wanted her first 6 months as “Do Nothing” time – her well deserved rest after a distinguished career.  She really wanted to travel, so we came up with a month long trip to Costa Rica as her “reward”, and as a fun transition from her “JOB” life to her life in “RETIREMENT”.  She even put up a calendar for her to tick off the days ‘til her retirement,… and the departure for Costa Rica.

So, even if she did not go into the decorating, or the mobile notary business, she had now handled the fear around “what am I going to do? and how am I going to supplement my pension income?” Also, she had something tangible to look forward to as her reward for all her years of service.  This was a good start, and she admitted that she was no longer feeling that anxious about retirement, and that it was now easier to go in to work.

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930’s 40’s, 50’s, and even the 60’s

December 12th, 2006

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the

1930’s 40’s, 50’s, and even the 60’s

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they

carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn’t get

tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored

lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we

rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took

hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE

actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soda pop with sugar

in it, but we weren’t overweight because

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back

when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down

the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the

bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo’s, X-boxes, no video games at all, no

99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell

phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat

rooms……….WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no

lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us

forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and

tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out

very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang

the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t

had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.

They actually sided with the law!

These generations has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers

and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!

George Carlin’s view on aging

December 13th, 2006

George Carlin is one of my favorite “philosphers”…

Boomers, Listen UP!

George Carlin’s view on aging:

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we’re kids?

If you’re less than 10 years old, you’re so excited about aging that you think in fractions. “How old are you?” “I’m four and a half!”

You’re never thirty-six and a half. You’re four and a half, going on five!

That’s the key. You get into your teens, now they can’t hold you back.

You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead. “How old are you?”

“I’m gonna be 16!” You could be 13, but hey, you’re gonna be 16!

And then the greatest day of your life . . . you become 21. Even the

words sound like a ceremony . . . YOU BECOME 21. . . YEARS!!!

But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk. He TURNED, we had to throw him out. There’s no fun now, you’re just a sour-dumpling.

What’s wrong? What’s changed?

You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you’re PUSHING 40.

Whoa! Put on the brakes, it’s all slipping away. Before you know it, you

REACH 50 . . . and your dreams are gone.

But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn’t think you would!

So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.

You’ve built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it’s a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday! You get into your 80s and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime.

And it doesn’t end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; “I was JUST 92.” Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. “I’m 100 and a half!”

May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctor worry about them. That is why you pay him/her.

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. ” An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.” And the devil’s name is Alzheimer’s.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8 Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don’t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, to the next county, to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

If you don’t send this to at least 8 people.

Woopdeedo, who cares ..
